Waste

Disposal of waste from ships is prohibited in Swedish territorial waters and the Swedish exclusive economic zone, with a few exceptions. Ships shall deliver all waste types for which disposal at sea is prohibited, to a port reception facility. Ports are required to accept waste deliveries from ships that carry waste types that are frequent to the port.

Swedish regulations surrounding disposal of ship waste as well as port reception of waste are based on the MARPOL convention, the Directive (EU 2019/883) on port reception facilities for the delivery of waste from ships and the Helsinki convention.

The Swedish regulations are implemented through SFS 1980:424 and SFS 1980:789 as well as the Swedish transport authority’s regulations.

Regulations regarding waste disposal from ships are stated in TSFS 2010:96. Regulations regarding waste receptions in ports are stated in TSFS 2023:15.
