Exemption from waste delivery
Ships in scheduled traffic with frequent and regular port calls can, if they meet the requirements, apply for an exemption from waste delivery in Swedish ports from the Swedish Transport agency. Ships that are granted an exemption from waste delivery in a Swedish port are also exempted from waste notification in Maritime Single Window (MSW) when calling the before mentioned port.
The Swedish Transport Agency can grant exemptions from waste delivery in Swedish ports. Ships that are granted an exemption from waste delivery in a Swedish port are also exempted from waste notification when calling that port.
An exemption is valid until the circumstances stated in the application change or for a maximum of three years, whichever comes first.
To be able to apply for an exemption from waste delivery, the ship has to be in scheduled traffic with frequent and regular port calls. The maximum amount of time between a regularly reoccurring port call in a Swedish port can be no longer than 14 days. There must also be an arrangement that ensures the delivery of the waste and payment of the fees in a port along the ship’s route.
The arrangement has to be evidenced by a signed contract with a port or waste contractor and by waste delivery receipts. The applicant has to notify all ports on the ships route about the application for the exemption. The arrangement must have been accepted by the port where the delivery and payment take place.
An exemption from waste delivery must not pose a negative impact on maritime safety, health, shipboard living or working conditions or on the marine environment
The exemption is only valid if the dedicated storage capacity is sufficient for the waste that will accumulate during the voyage of the ship until the next port of call.
Ships that are granted an exemption will receive an exemption certificate from the Swedish Transport Agency.
Application for exemption from waste delivery should be submitted on the form “Application for exemption from waste delivery from ships in scheduled traffic”. The form as well as obligatory appendixes is to be sent to the Swedish Transport Agency via e-mail to sjofart@transportstyrelsen.se.
For processing the application, a fee is charged according to the Swedish Transport Agency’s current price regulation.
