To apply for a train driver's licence

To be able to apply for a train driver's licence, you must be 20 years of age or, if there are special reasons for it, 18 years of age.

You must attach a number of documents to your application. Once you have applied, you will receive an invoice for the application fee sent to your population registration address. Once it has been paid, we will begin processing your case and request possible additions.

Documents to send in with your application

When you apply for a train driver's licence, a number of documents must be attached to the application. Make sure you have the documents ready when you start your application.

Occupational psychological examinations

You must do an occupational psychological examination with a psychologist with special permission from the Swedish Transport Agency to carry out these examinations.

Medical opinion

You must do an initial health examination for train drivers with a doctor with special permission from the Swedish Transport Agency to do these examinations.

Grades from high school education

You must have completed a high school education with a minimum grade E in the subjects Swedish 1 or Swedish as a second language 1, mathematics 1a, 1b or 1c, and English 5 (according to the National Agency for Education does not correspond to a passing grade F) or other equivalent education (for example adult education, folk high school or foreign gymnasium).

Results from driving licence tests

You have completed our test for a driver's licence with a passed result.

Photo and signature

You have taken a photo and left your signature at one of the Swedish Transport Administration's driving test offices.

After you have applied

Processing of your application should be ready within a month after your application is received and complete. If your application is not complete, we will ask you to complete it by email or post.

If your application has been approved, we will send your train driver's certificate to your population registration address as soon as it has been manufactured.

If you previously had a driver's licence that was revoked, you can re-apply for a driver's licence based on your previous qualifications. You must then send in a new medical report from an initial examination of the train driver and pay the application fee. You do not need to submit a grade, occupational psychological examination or test result.

If the application fee is not paid within 60 days, your application will be rejected but you can apply at a later time.
