Application for the Establishment of a Restricted Area

The Swedish Transport Agency has the authority to impose restrictions or prohibitions on aviation by designating restricted areas. Such measures may be taken for for reasons of military operations, if necessary to maintain public order and safety, to protect outdoor recreational activities, nature or environmental conservation, or to prevent disturbances during large-scale public gatherings or events. The Agency may also issue regulations governing activities within restricted areas.

A complete application must be submitted to the Swedish Transport Agency no later than seven weeks prior to the intended start date of the restricted area.

Application Requirements

Your application must include the following mandatory information:

1. Contact Information 

Provide the following details of the organisation or authority submitting the application:

  • Name of the organisation or authority
  • Address, postal code, and city
  • Telephone number, email address, and designated contact person

2. Planned Activity 

Describe the nature of the planned activity to be carried out within the proposed area.

3. Justification

State the reasons why a restrcited area is necessary and what objective or purpose it is intended to serve.

4. Area Information

4.1 Coordinates and Buffer Zone

  • Describe the area using coordinates in WGS84 format.
  • Limit the number of coordinates to a maximum of 10 to define the area.
  • Provide the coordinates in clockwise order, starting from the north-westernmost point.
  • Example format: 625038N0124302E - 624756N0125849E - 624213N0125126E - 624738N0124025E - 625038N0124302E
  • For drone (UAS) operations, apply a safety buffer of 1 nautical mile (NM) around the area.
  • The LFV Drone Map tool is recommended for creating and converting coordinates.

4.2 Altitude and Vertical Buffer

  • Specify the maximum altitude of the area in feet AMSL (Above Mean Sea Level).
  • For UAS/drone operations, add a vertical safety buffer of 500 feet (150 metres) to the operational height.

5. Period of Validity

Provide the start and end date and time in UTC format, e.g. 2022-01-01 0900 – 2022-12-31 2359.
For continuous validity between two dates, state H24.

Example schedule:

  • MON 0900–1600
  • TUE 0900–1300
  • WED 0800–1300
  • THU N/A
  • FRI 1100–1400

6. Supporting Documentation

  • Attach a map of the proposed area (e.g. created using the LFV Drone Map).
  • For drone operations, include the operational authorisation (or proof of application of an operational authorisation) in accordance with Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 of 24 May 2019 on the rules and procedures for the operation of unmanned aircraft.
  • Include any additional relevant information that may assist in processing and assesing the application.

7. Coordination

If coordination has taken place with other authorities, stakeholders, or operators potentially affected by the proposed restriction, specify:

  • Who was contacted
  • Their contact details
  • The outcome of the coordination

The following information should be included in the application, where applicable:

8. Exempted from the Restriction

List any parties that should be exempted from the airspace restrictions.

9. Name of the Area

Propose a name for the danger area. The name should have a clear geographical connection to the location.

How to Submit Your Application

The complete application must be submitted to the Swedish Transport Agency no later than seven weeks prior to the intended start date of the restricted area.
