Bilateral agreement

Access to the Swedish coastal traffic is granted to vessels from countries where bilateral agreements on mutual access are available. When there is such a bilateral agreement between the countries the ship needs no coastal trade permit.

Bilateral agreements on mutual access to each country's maritime transport market have been reached with:

  • Argentina
  • Faroe Islands
  • Iceland (vessels with a net tonnage of 30)
  • Japan
  • Norway

Vessels registered in the United States and Sweden has been granted the right within the other country of transporting empty containers and other stevedoring equipment. Ships with these flags can thus carry out transport operations in Swedish coastal traffic without applying for a coastal trade permit.
