The reporting requirements are mandatory and are stated in the Swedish Transport Agency's regulations.

The Swedish Transport Agency may take judicial proceedings against those who do not report electronically to SafeSeaNet Sweden (SSNS) via their internal system or via the web application.

Sweden as a Member State of the European Union is obliged to carry out regular inspections and any other action required to check that the set requirements are followed and that sanctions are applied. On the other hand, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) is carrying out inspections of the Member States.
