Licence conversions
This page contains information on how to convert a third country licence (non-EASA licence) to an EASA-licence.
The third country licence along with a type- or class rating (for the rating that is intended to be converted) has to be valid in order to convert the licence. The applicant is required to have PIC-privileges for the rating to be converted.
The theoretical examinations that are required for PPL, BPL, SPL and ATPL conversions are setup as the application of conversion is approved by the Swedish Transport Agency. If you have already taken and passed a theoretical examination for the purpose of the conversion in another EASA member state, the theoretical examination documentation should be attached to the application.
For conversions to an EASA licence issued by the Swedish Transport Agency, an EASA medical issued by the Swedish Transport Agency will have to be obtained as well.
Skill tests carried out in the aircraft requires the applicant to have a valid medical of the relevant class for the conversion. Skill tests carried out in a simulator does not require a medical, but it does have to be obtained prior to the issuance of the licence.
For holders of a PPL issued by the FAA, there may be an option to have the licence converted through the BASA agreement. More information of the BASA agreement can be found on the page FAA certificate conversion – BASA agreement. If you are not eligible for a BASA conversion, the information below applies.
For applicants with 100h total time or more
The applicant has to fulfil the requirement for the relevant aircraft category:
- Fulfil the requirements for the issue of the relevant class or type rating, in accordance with subpart H in regulation (EU) 1178/2011
- Pass an EASA theoretical examination consisting of the subjects Air law and Human performance
- Obtain an EASA medical certificate, minimum class 2
- Obtain an EASA language proficiency, minimum level 4
- Pass an EASA skill test, as relevant, in accordance with regulation (EU) 1178/2011, regulation (EU) 2018/395 or Implementing regulation (EU) 2018/1976

For applicants with less than 100h total time
Holders of a licence with less than 100h total time cannot have the licence converted. In this case it is possible to apply for reduced training through a training organisation. The training organisation will through an assessment determine how much training that may be reduced (both theoretical and flight training) and then apply for reduced training to the Swedish Transport Agency.
After approval from the Swedish Transport Agency the applicant must complete the required training, successfully complete the theoretical knowledge examinations (all 9 subjects). Apart from this, the requirements mentioned under "For applicants with 100h total time or more" applies.
A CPL cannot be converted. To obtain an EASA CPL as a third country CPL licence holder, the candidate can apply for reduced training through a training organisation to have the training (both theoretical and flight training) reduced. The training organisation will through an assessment determine how much training that may be reduced (both theoretical and flight training) and then apply for reduced training to the Swedish Transport Agency.
Candidates choosing the option of reduced training must fulfil the requirements below in order to be issued a CPL:
- Fulfil the CPL experience requirements (modular)
- Fulfil the requirements for the issue of the relevant class or type rating, in accordance with subpart H in regulation (EU) 1178/2011
- Pass a full EASA CPL or ATPL theoretical examination
- Obtain an EASA medical certificate class 1
- Obtain an EASA language proficiency, minimum level 4
- Pass an EASA CPL skill test, in accordance with regulation (EU) 1178/2011
Use the service below to retrieve the training organisations who provide training to CPL.
To convert an ATPL, the applicant will have to fulfil the requirements below.
- Fulfil the experience requirements for the issue of an ATPL, for the relevant aircraft category, according to subpart F in Annex I to regulation (EU) 1178/2011. See table below.
- Fulfil the requirements for the issue of the relevant class or type rating, in accordance with subpart H in regulation (EU) 1178/2011
- Pass a full EASA theoretical ATPL examination
- Obtain an EASA medical certificate class 1

- Pass an EASA ATPL skill test, in accordance with regulation (EU) 1178/2011.
