Questions and answers about the control sticker

Why has the control sticker been discontinued?

The control sticker has been discontinued to reduce costs for the state and to reduce administrative costs for trade and industry. Another reason is to make life easier for vehicle owners.

Do the new rules mean I have to do anything as a vehicle owner?

No, you don’t. The control sticker may be left on your number plate, but it will no longer serve any purpose. You will have to remember to check that you have paid vehicle tax, have valid traffic insurance and that your vehicle has passed its safety inspection.

How do I make an off road notification now when there is no control sticker?

As before, you can apply for off road notification in three different ways:

You no longer need to use the scratch code. Instead use:

  • the authorisation code on the registration certificate and your registration number
    or
  • confirm your authorisation using digital ID (only if making an off road notification online)

Will number plates look different?

There are not currently any plans to redesign vehicle number plates.

Can I stick anything else in the space on the number plate where the control sticker used to be?

No, it is not permitted to stick anything else on the number plate. In fact this is already a rule. However, if a control sticker has been stuck on the number plate in line with the old rules, it does not have to be removed. In other words the old control sticker can be left on the number plate.

How much will a car owner save when the control sticker now is discontinued?

Car owners will not save any money. The control sticker has only been a sign that the vehicle owner has paid vehicle tax, has valid traffic insurance and that the vehicle has passed its safety inspection.

Do I not need to pay tax now there’s no control sticker?

Tax must still be paid. A payment slip will be sent out as usual.

Will there be any other means of indicating that tax has been paid?

There will not be any ‘physical’ identification in the form of a sticker. Information on whether or not tax has been paid may be obtained from the Swedish Road Traffic Registry via various channels.

How can the police see that tax and insurance have been paid and that the safety inspection has been passed when there is no control sticker?

The police can check the Swedish Road Traffic Registry directly using the vehicle registration number.
