Congestion tax in Gothenburg

Congestion tax will be charged for Swedish-registered vehicles that are driven into and out of central Gothenburg, Mondays to Fridays between 06.00 and 18.29.

The tax will not be charged on Saturdays, weekends or public holidays, on a day preceding a public holiday or during the month of July. Some vehicles are exempt from congestion tax.

Vehicles are automatically registered at 'control points' during the periods when congestion tax is charged. Each passage into or out of central Gothenburg will cost SEK 8, 13 or 18, depending on the time of day. The maximum amount per day and vehicle will be SEK 60.

Monthly payments

The Swedish Transport Agency will send a payment slip to the owner of the vehicle at the end of each month. On this payment slip, the passages made during the preceding calendar month are aggregated in the form of a tax decision. You can only pay once the tax decision has been taken.

Tax must be paid into the Swedish Transport Agency's congestion tax account no later than on the last day of the month following the notification month. It is not possible to pay anything at a control point. The owner of the vehicle is responsible for paying the tax, even if they have not received a payment slip. If the tax is not paid on time, a surcharge of SEK 500 will be imposed.

Month 1Month 2Month 3
The vehicle's passages during Month 1 are registered.  The tax decision for Month 1 is determined and a payment slip is issued at the end of Month 2. The payment for Month 1 should be registered with the Swedish Transport Agency on the last day of Month 3.

The Congestion Tax Act (2004:629) regulates this tax. (In Swedish only.)
