About us

The Swedish Transport Agency is working to achieve good accessibility, high quality, secure and environmentally aware rail, air, sea and road transport. We have overall responsibility for drawing up regulations and ensuring that authorities, companies, organisations and citizens abide by them.

The Swedish Transport Agency was established on the 1st of January 2009.

The Civil Aviation Department formulates regulations, examines and grants permits, as well as assessing civil aviation with particular regard to safety and security. We also monitor developments in the aviation market.

The Maritime Department formulates regulations, examines and grants permits, as well as exercising supervision principally of Swedish and foreign vessels sailing in Swedish waters. We work to improve maritime safety and environmental influence for recreational boating. We also analyse accidents and near-misses. We are located in Norrköping, Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö and Sundsvall.

The Traffic Registry Department administers and develops the road traffic registry, which supplies society with information about vehicles, driving licences and commercial transport. We also operate the congestion charge system.

The Road And Rail Department formulates regulations, examines and grants permits, as well as exercising supervision within the field of road and rail transport over e.g. road traffic, vehicles, driving licences, commercial transport, railway, light rail and underground systems. We also conduct analyses of road traffic and supply information about injuries and accidents within the road transport system. We are working to achieve a high level of security and an efficient transport market characterised by healthy competition.
