Import, relocation goods
Have you lived abroad for at least one year and are moving to Sweden, bringing a vehicle that you have owned and used abroad for at least one year?
In certain cases, your vehicle may then be classed as relocation goods. The vehicle will then be granted exemptions from the technical requirements at the registration inspection.
In the following cases 'relocation goods should not be selected'
If the vehicle met current requirements when it was taken into traffic for the first time within the EU the category relocation goods is not required in order for the vehicle to be approved at the registration inspection. This applies to most vehicles imported from an EU country.
In addition, relocation goods is not required for passenger cars of model year 1969 or older.
Please contact an inspection company to find out more about whether your vehicle would need to be classed as relocation goods or not.
A vehicle can be classed as relocation goods if you...
- have lived abroad for at least one year
- have been the owner of the vehicle for at least one year
- have used the vehicle abroad for at least one year.
Attach the following documents to your application for relocation goods
The following documents should be sent in together with your application (in addition to those required for your application for verification of origin)
- Documentation certifying that you have been resident abroad for at least one year (for example a copy of your tenancy agreement or employment agreement).
- Documentation certifying that you have been the owner of the vehicle for at least one year (which should be stated on the registration certificate).
- Documentation certifying that you have used the vehicle for at least one year (for example a copy of a certificate of insurance from abroad)
The Swedish Transport Agency approves your application, but the inspection company makes the final decision
When you choose relocation goods as your import category for your application for verification of origin the Swedish Transport Agency only decides if your application meets the requirements or not.
If your application is approved you should bring the decision to the vehicle inspection company and present it at the registration inspection. It is then up to the vehicle inspection company to decide if the exemption should be granted in order for the vehicle to be registered in Sweden.
This might mean that relocation goods is not applied in the end, despite the Swedish Transport Agency granting it. This is because vehicles should not be registered with exemptions that they do not need.
Relocation goods and the Swedish Customs
The Swedish Customs also have an exemption called relocation goods. Despite the names being identical these are two different matters.
The relocation goods of the Swedish Customs involves the fees you pay at the customs clearance. The relocation goods of the Swedish Transport Agency on the other hand grants exemptions from the technical requirements at the registration inspection.
Since these two exemptions are two completely different things the requirements to apply them are different.
