Own use as an import category enables certain exemptions for your
vehicle at the registration inspection. If your vehicle is not EC
type approved, and is made after 1968, you might need these
exemptions to be able to register your vehicle in Sweden.
To be able to categorize your vehicle as own use, it has
to
- be series-produced
- have been acquired abroad by a person who lives in Sweden, or
by an agent representing a person who lives in Sweden
- be intended for use in Sweden.
You cannot use import category own use if
- you already have registered a vehicle using own use
in the past 12 months.
This is governed by TSFS 2010:106.
For this category, it should be certified that the vehicle meets
EC requirements or national Swedish requirements that apply to
brakes, noise, anti-theft devices, plastic tanks and asbestos-free
friction linings (model year 1988 or later as regards
asbestos).
The category own use is only applicable for private cars,
trucks/lorrys, motorcycles, buses and trailers that are pulled by
one of these. For more information regarding your vehicle
specifically, please contact a vehicle inspection company. The
exempts cannot be applied to a vehicle that are to be
used professionally.
Please contact a vehicle inspection company to
certify if your vehicle will need import category own use, and if
the exemptions given will be enough to pass the registration
inspection.
Have you bought the vehicle using an agent?
Instead of going abroad for the purchase yourself, you can hire
an agent to do it for you. Please note that the agent are just that
- an agent - and should therefore never be the owner of the
vehicle. This should be apparent from the purchase document or
receipt.
If you have hired an agent, a power of attorney should be made.
It should state what the agent are hired to do (for example
purchase of a vehicle abroad), by whom and when it is written. You
will have to send a copy of this document to us when applying for
verification of origin.
Special checks for vehicles brought in for own use
Passenger cars with a model year of 1989 and later, where the
emission approvals according to the EU Directive cannot be applied,
must be approved for emissions in Sweden to enable them to be used.
For this reason, these vehicles must correspond with the
specification for an emission-approved design.
For those cars brought in for own use, a comparative check can
be conducted – a 'component check' – with a Swedish
emission approval. The manufacturer or the Swedish general agent
can certify compliance for these vehicles.
If the registration inspection shows that the rules for
exemption for own use cannot be applied, the passenger car can only
be approved if the following is certified:
- it satisfies all safety requirements
- it is subject to Directive 70/220/EEC, as worded in accordance
with 91/441/EEC or later amending directives that have been
adopted, if it is a year model of 1989 or later.
